Meet Jobeth Copping-Barrett – Head of Wills and Probate at Sinclair Law Solicitors

I joined Sinclair Law in October 2022, as a private client solicitor and head of the private client team.

I was keen to join the firm from the moment I heard of the vacancy. Sinclair Law is a well-known name in family law in Cheshire. Specialising in family law means that the firm is dedicated to providing a caring, personal and attentive service for clients during emotional and stressful times. Expanding the firm by developing a private client department alongside the established and leading family practice seems to me, to make perfect sense.

The firm has a history of helping clients with matters that we consider private client work: that is, preparing Wills, preparing power of attorney applications, cases of probate (applying for the grant only and going on to assist with estate administration) and guiding clients in matters of trusts and estate planning. It has been some time since the firm offered a complete service in this regard. However, now is the time to refresh our brand in this regard and grow the firm to include a thriving private client department.

I’ve been working in private client for almost 4 years and love the variety. Every day you meet different people from the biggest variety of backgrounds with the most interesting stories and life experiences. And every day I am reminded not only that I love what I do, but that it’s never too soon to start your estate planning. Estate planning is a very generic term, but includes so many different things. From ensuring you have a current and accurate, valid Will in place; to preparing a lasting power of attorney. It also includes an element of financial planning, using mechanisms like trusts, pensions and insurance policies to both safeguard your future and protect your family and loved ones; as well as guiding clients in the use of accurate record keeping to assist any loved ones in managing your affairs when you have lost capacity or in the event of your death.

I completed my law degree at City, University of London; followed by a Master’s in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice at the University of Birmingham before engaging in my LPC at the University of Law in Manchester. I spent some time honing my business acumen working in marketing before completing my training contract at a niche law firm in Cheshire, following which I led a private client department in Didsbury.

We moved to a ‘fixer-upper’ in Didsbury in June 2022, just 2 months before the birth of my son. We live an active lifestyle, full of outdoor adventures with our cocker spaniel, Poppy. I play goal keeper in a social, competitive league in south Manchester. The team have been together for 7 years, having lost and gained a few players along the way.
