Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer and some 2,000 people are looking for a potentially lifesaving blood stem cell donor each year.
With only 2% of the UK population on the stem cell register we need to increase those numbers so that ultimately we can provide a stem cell match for everyone that needs one. Most people haven’t heard of the stem cell register and yet to join it all it takes a simple cheek swab and 2 minutes of your time.
Since we launched in the UK, in 2013 we have registered more than 500,000 people as potential blood stem cell donors. Some of these amazing people have gone on to donate blood stem cells, giving more than 800 second chances of life to blood cancer patients. But we need more.
Communities, universities, sporting associations and commercial companies play a vital role in the fight against blood cancer. They help us reach audiences which may be hard to reach through other channels.
One person really can make a difference. The more people who join the fight against blood cancer, the greater difference we could make together.
Our mission is to provide a suitable donor for every person in need of a blood stem cell donation and ultimately delete blood cancer.
We work towards achieving our mission by raising awareness and empowering people to register as potential blood stem cell donors, and to join our campaign by taking action in their communities, schools, and companies; working with volunteers and organisations throughout the UK to inspire and register more people..
