We have been established for over 6 years. We are completely independent and not part of any nationwide large chain of Foodbanks which means that we do not pay any hefty joining fees or annual memberships to provide the service that we do.
We are not government funded, we have to find every penny to keep running. We do this via applying for funding grants (which can be laborious, lengthy and often unsuccessful) fundraising, networking and predominantly with the support from our amazing communities that wholly believe in the work that we do. Despite popular belief, foodbanks are not just for people struggling on benefits. We have seen an increase of people that are in working positions or on zero hour contracts utilize our services.
We have 4 distribution outlets throughout Stockport which operate on 4 different days throughout the week, can you imagine how much food and toiletries we give out? A lot! Not only do we give out food but also we run a Pots and Pans Project as some service users do not even have the utensils to cook the food in that we give them. This could be because they have had to flee domestic violence and literally have nothing, or it could be somebody that is moving into their first home and needs a little extra support. Our Pots and Pans Project is passing on donated items of saucepans, crockery, cutlery and small kitchen items such as kettles, toasters and microwaves. We work with a lot of referral agents such as Stockport Homes and GMP that are aware of this other service we provide along with our food parcels.
Currently we are on a bigger mission to raise more funds and awareness of the work that we do. One challenge that we are driving forward to help us achieve this, is to walk the Machu Picchu Inca Trail. Could you be part of this Chelwood Challenge for April 2020? We need to create lots of fundraising ideas and events to make this happen and all genuine suggestions and offers are very welcome.
